What is Speedway ?

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

Don’t know what speedway is ?  Don’t worry, it’s very simple yet very exciting.

There 4 riders that race over four laps of an oval track and each race is over in less than a minute.  The exciting part is that the riders race 500cc engine which is fueled by methanol, single-geared machines with no brakes. Yes thats right, i said no brakes.  It’s hectic, dangerous, exciting and the bikes acceleration matches that of a Formula One car. What more could you ask for………

Speedways strongholds in Europe are the UK, Sweden, Poland and Denmark. All of these countries have their own leagues and have regular fixtures throughout the traditional speedway season that runs from March to October.  The domestic league matches consist of 2 teams riding against each other with 4 riders in each race - 2 home team riders and 2 away team riders.

At the end of every race (heat) the positioning of the riders determines how many points each team gets example- 1st rider gets - 3 points, 2nd - 2 points , 3rd - 1 points , 4th 0 points .  The team with the most points at the end of the meeting is the winner.

Don’t panic Europe is not the only place to speedway, countries such Australia, Argentina, Czech Republic, Italy, Slovenia, Russia and the USA also have leagues.
